The Method Hybrid racing
Does cardio kill your gains?
No. Muscle and maximal strength barely notice. Explosive power dips a little, mostly when both share a session.
StrongGood evidence, with a caveat worth knowing.

What most people miss
The interference effect is real, but it is smaller and narrower than its reputation. Across 43 studies, adding conditioning to lifting cost muscle growth and maximal strength next to nothing, and explosive power a little, more when both shared a session.1
The details are where it hides. A 2024 analysis found lower-body strength gains blunted in men, not women,2 and running costs more than cycling, as do more and longer sessions.3
A 2026 review of 17 analyses found combined training matched lifting alone for strength and size.4 For a hybrid racer that is the whole game: you can build both, if the running is planned around the lifting rather than piled on top of it.

Meta-analysis · 43 studies
Adding aerobic training changed muscle growth (−0.01) and maximal strength (−0.06) by effectively nothing. Explosive strength dipped (−0.28), more when both shared a session.

Lower-body strength gains were blunted in men (−0.43), not in women; VO2max gains were blunted only in untrained people.

Meta-analysis · 21 studies
Running reduced muscle and strength gains; cycling did not. More frequent and longer endurance sessions went with smaller gains.

From the floor
Running and lifting are planned as one week, and the conditioning counts against each muscle's recovery ceiling. Every station and every set is rated, and the next one adjusts.
