The Method Women through menopause

How many days a week should you strength train?

As many as it takes to fit your weekly hard sets. With the sets matched, two days builds as much muscle as four.

What most people miss

Days are the wrong thing to count. What builds muscle is hard sets per muscle per week, and with weekly sets matched, growth came out the same whether they were spread over two days or four, across 25 studies.1

More sets do build more, but each one adds less than the last.2 So the real question is how many hard sets you can do well in a week, and then how many sessions it takes to fit them before the last ones turn sloppy.

Strength is a little different. Across 178 studies, the best-ranked prescription for strength was heavy, several sets, three times a week.3

So two sessions a week is a real program, not a compromise, as long as the sets are in it.

  1. Schoenfeld, Grgic, Krieger, 2019 · J Sports Sci

    Meta-analysis · 25 studies

With weekly volume matched, training a muscle more or less often made no significant difference to growth.

  2. Pelland, Remmert, Robinson et al., 2026 · Sports Med

    Meta-regressions · 67 studies · 2,058 people

Four weekly sets was the smallest dose with detectable growth; each further step took more sets (about 6 between 5 and 10 sets, about 10.75 between 19 and 29). Indirect sets counted as half fitted best. 78% of the growth data came from sets to failure.

  3. Currier, Mcleod, Banfield et al., 2023 · Br J Sports Med

    Network meta-analysis · 178 studies · 5,097 people

Loads above 80% of a max built the most strength; heavy, multi-set, three times a week ranked first. Every prescription grew muscle about equally.
