The Method Over 50

Is it too late to build muscle at 60 or 70?

No. Adults in their late seventies and eighties gain strength and muscle from lifting. Age changes how much, not whether.

What most people miss

The research question is no longer whether older muscle responds. Across 22 randomised trials in adults 75 and older, lifting raised strength and whole-muscle size, and strength rose even in those over 80.1 The trials reported few adverse events.

What age changes is the size of the return. Across 49 studies of adults over 50, lifting added about 1.1 kg of lean mass on average, more with higher-volume programs, and less the older people were.2 Age is a reason to start sooner, not a reason not to start.

One detail most people miss: in the trials of adults over 75, grip strength did not move significantly while whole-body strength did.1 A grip test is a common check-up at this age, and it can understate what lifting is doing for the legs.

  1. Grgic, Garofolini, Orazem et al., 2020 · Sports Med

    Meta-analysis · 22 randomised trials · adults 75 and older

Lifting raised muscle strength (effect size 0.97), including in those 80 and older (1.28), and whole-muscle size (0.30). Grip strength and muscle fibre size did not change significantly. Few adverse events were reported.

    Meta-analysis · 49 studies · 1,328 adults aged 50 and over

Lifting added 1.1 kg of lean mass on average. Higher-volume programs added more, and older participants gained less.
