How to choose a personal trainer in Vancouver

Pick the person you will still want to train with in three years. What to ask, what to watch for and what it costs.

You are not buying sessions. You are choosing a person.

Train twice a week and you will spend more than 80 hours a year in the same room as your coach. The right one knows your history, notices when something is off and changes the plan before you ask. That takes years to build, so choose like it will last.

The long game

Good coaching compounds

The first months
They learn how you move, what you have done before and what you actually want. The plan is a first draft, and a good coach says so.
The first year
The template disappears. They know which weeks to push and which to hold, and they can tell you are off before you say a word.
Year three
They have coached you through a busy season, a holiday, a sore shoulder and a lift you did not think you had. Nothing needs explaining twice, because it is all written down.

Supervision itself counts too. In the trials, people coached directly lifted heavier and progressed faster than people training alone. Is a personal trainer worth it?

Fit

You should leave the first session feeling understood, not sold to

Credentials get someone through the door. Whether you mesh decides whether you are still there in a year. Signs you mesh:

  • They asked more than they talked.
  • They watched you move before they told you anything.
  • They explained the why in a sentence, not a lecture.
  • It was hard, and you want to come back.
  • You would tell them the truth about your week.

Before you pay

Seven questions worth asking

What are you certified in, and who have you coached?
A good answer: Personal training is not a licensed profession in BC, so ask. A recognized certification is the minimum. More telling is who they have coached most, and for how long.
What happens in the first session?
A good answer: They assess how you move and ask about your history before they prescribe anything. If the first session is a pitch, that is your answer.
Will I train with you every week?
A good answer: Mostly, yes. Someone who knows you is the point. Ask how cover works when they are away.
How do you track my progress?
A good answer: Every set written down, not remembered. Ask to see what that looks like.
What happens when something hurts?
A good answer: They change the session instead of pushing through it, and they work alongside your physiotherapist or doctor rather than diagnosing you.
How will you plan the next three months?
A good answer: Built back from what you want, and adjusted as you go. If everyone gets the same answer, it is a template.
What does it cost, all in?
A good answer: The price per session with tax, how long a session runs, whether it is 1-on-1, and exactly what you are committing to. Ask before you start, not after.

What it costs

What personal training costs in Vancouver

We checked the published prices of Vancouver personal training studios in October 2026. Private 1-on-1 sessions ran from under $50 to over $250. Once GST is added, most sat between about $90 and $180. The headline number rarely tells you enough. Compare minutes per session, 1-on-1 or shared, tax included or added, and how long a package lasts.

Ours

$126 to $147 for 50 minutes, 1-on-1, GST included

On a membership. For flexibility, session packs run $150 to $200 a session. The infrared sauna and cold plunge are included with training, and Point Zero, your first session, is free.

Walk away if

Five red flags

  1. 01Everyone gets the same program.
  2. 02Nobody asks about your injuries or your history.
  3. 03You are asked to sign before you have trained once.
  4. 04Nothing is written down.
  5. 05Pain is treated as something to push through.
